October’s Top-Rated Beers for March

Spring has almost sprung and breweries have been ushering in the seasonal change with a roster of seriously impressive new offerings. While one deep, dark and delicious bourbon barrel-aged dubbel made our list, this month our team gravitated towards out-of-the-box debuts ready for warmer weather. Sours can sometimes be divisive, but this month our reviewers sampled two that embody everything the genre can be: funky and tart, yet balanced and utterly drinkable. We also loved an unexpected, cinnamon-kissed blonde ale and a textbook hazy IPA that you’ll want to crush all season long.

92: Funkwerks’ Miho
“Miho has just about everything one could ask for in a beer,” Tom Thornton says. This “balanced” Belgian pale ale boasts “big accents of banana, clove, and spice work well here with tropical fruit and citrus flavors,” which make for a “clean, refreshing ale with a dry finish" that stays "interesting long after the first few sips.”

92: Grimm Artisanal Ales’ Niceties
“‘Wow,’ was the first thing that came to mind when this beer hit my tongue,” says Jesse Bussard of this barrel-aged golden sour ale. A second fermentation with four pounds-per-gallon of pineapples makes for a “sour beer with ample parts funk and fruit” that “pours a soft, yet brilliantly clear pale golden-straw color that’s crowned with a crisp, off-white head” and is “crisp and refreshing with a smooth, pleasant acidity.”

93: The Bruery’s Or Xata
“Or Xata is smooth and creamy, with a light dusting of cinnamon capping off the first sip.” writes Jerard Fagerberg of this horchata-inspired lactose-dosed blonde ale in which the “extra booze comes through like honey, adding to the delightful combination of lactose and caramelized sugar” that makes for an “infinitely refreshing elixir that’s made for beachside taco truck trips.”

93: Ommegang’s Double Barrel Dubbel
“If you see Double Barrel on your store’s shelf, don’t hesitate—buy it immediately,” urges Charlie Crespo, who says this “ideal fall beer” with a “soft and creamy” mouthfeel” and an aroma redolent of “dark fruit, like raisins and dates” is “like sitting outside, taking in the changing leaves and cool breeze, sipping an apple cider with a splash of bourbon.”

96: Jester King’s Ru55
“If you are in search of a beautifully crafted wild ale, don’t pass up any of Texas-based brewer Jester King’s offerings,” Tucker Anders writes. The farmhouse brewery produces this unfiltered, unpasteurized sour red ale aged in oak barrels with an aroma that fills the “nose with tart and funky sour notes as soon as the bottle is popped” and a flavor profile that is “unabashedly tart” with “layers of fruit, wood, and funk, accompanied by an easy-drinking mouthfeel that resembles a session ale more than something with this depth of flavor.”

96: Bearded Iris’ Double Dry-Hopped Ever Clever
“Double Dry-Hopped Ever Clever is a great example of why dry-hopped, hazy IPAs have captivated the craft beer community,” raves Tucker Anders of this hazy number brewed with Simcoe, Mosaic, Motueka, and Centennial hops that “pairs vibrant tropical flavor with just enough of a bitter punch to offset the style’s sweetness.”
