Ommegang Idyll Days Is the Perfect Beer for Doing Absolutely Nothing

June 01, 2020

By Jerard Fagerberg, June 01, 2020

What are you doing right now? Not a damn thing? Me neither.

The most unprecedented thing about (Ford commercial voice) these unprecedented times is the indolence. Furloughed and isolated, we’re stuck in a maddening loop of bed-fridge-couch-bed. Thankfully, New York’s Brewery Ommegang has delivered just the brew for these vacant days.

Idyll Days Pilsner is simple, but Ommegang makes a few adjustments that make it unforgettable. On its face, this is just another Czech pilsner in a crowded field, but with a few little tweaks to the traditional formula make for an unforgettable beer. First is Ommegang’s signature Belgian yeast, which is added to give the beer a robust barnyard aroma. Then, it’s left unfiltered, meaning the Czech malt comes to life in the sip, transporting you from your cat hair-coated mattress to a sunny hay loft in Bavaria.

There’s plenty of room to add in something fantastical, but Ommegang pulls back. No corrosive hops, no tart fruit. Why overcomplicate things? Sometimes all a classic needs is a dash of something different and a totally blank calendar in which to enjoy it.

Sink deeply into Idyll Days, like a bean bag chair. Let this unfiltered half-farmhouse lager lift you up out of your quarantine and into a world where idleness isn’t a state-mandated prevention method. And that is the beer’s greatest power—turning a mindless afternoon into a stint of dedicated rest. Each sip washes over you with a delightful amber sweetness, melting your anxieties away. Suddenly, the 16 ounces in your koozie is the most urgent thing in the world.

From the time you crack the can until you’re draining the last hazy drop, Idyll Days is an escape. Drink in a deep recline while wearing your favorite sweatpants. There is simply nothing else to do.
