Alvarado Street’s Contains No Juice Is Actually Juicy AF

September 18, 2019

By Jesse Bussard, September 18, 2019

What makes a hazy IPA great? Some might say it’s the haze; others the flavor or aroma. But I’d like for you to consider juiciness—the succulent, fruity, full-bodied nature of a hazy IPA.

When it comes to breweries hitting the juicy mark, California-based Alvarado Street Brewery’s Contains No Juice Double IPA knocks it out of the park. The brewery notes the beer’s recipe is “constantly tweaked to draw out as much juice-like character as possible, utilizing the interactions of hops and expressive yeast.” To top it all off, Contains No Juice won a 2018 Bronze Medal in the Hazy Double IPA category at the Great American Beer Festival, so you know it’s legit.

Appearance and Aroma

Contains No Juice’s can art is straightforward with the letters “C-N-J” laid out funky block-style green, red, and yellow lettering across a white background. The beer pours a hazy bright orange with an off-white foam that settles into a nice layer and leaves lacing on the glass as I drink. Ripe notes of tropical fruit and citrus hit my nose as I bring the glass up to my nose. Notes of mango, orange, tangerine, a touch of pine, and malty sweetness come through. It reminds me a bit of Juicy Fruit gum.

Hands down, this is probably one of the best hazy double IPAs I’ve had. ”

On the flavor side, a background of biscuit-y and caramel malt sweetness balances out nicely with the succulent, ripe tropical fruit and strong citrus character added by Citra and Mosaic hops. I can pick up the taste of fruits like mango, passion fruit, orange, guava, papaya, and a bit of pineapple. Contains No Juice is soft on the palate and finishes with a creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Surprisingly, at 8.5% ABV, its boozy nature is hidden quite well among the medley of fruity flavors present.

It’s ironic, but the juiciness factor is undeniable when drinking Contains No Juice. Its hop and malt combo work together to create a tropical explosion on the nose and palate paired with a fluffy mouthfeel that brings it all together. Hands down, this is probably one of the best hazy double IPAs I’ve had.
