As far as current slang goes, ‘fam’ is probably just about as silly as any of the other random things we say to each other. But the fact that it’s everywhere is not really an indictment of our thirst for trends. It’s actually about the many different ways we can define our families.
A family can be the one you were born into, but this slang word reminds us that it can be our group of tight friends, a looser group of people with shared interests, or any size group that we’ve chosen to express affection towards.
We can gather for music, for sports, or for beer, and the story will be the same. Fam will share.
So October invites you, fam, to enjoy delicious food and outstanding beer with us. Our new series of events, Family Craft, aims to highlight those families (biological or chosen) behind some of the country’s most inspired craft breweries and restaurants.
These families have committed their lives to maintaining their long-standing traditions and high quality products. They’ve made it their business to support their families and their community through their honest craft of brewing and cooking.
On Tuesday, May 9th, and Wednesday, May 10th, we’ll have our first event in this series in Austin, Texas.
Prince’s Hot Chicken, the original creators of Nashville style hot chicken, join local darlings Independence Brewing for an evening that will be a collaboration of two families that are dedicated to preserving the community through their family craft: Andre Prince Jefferies, third generation owner of Prince’s, and Rob and Amy Cartwright, the husband-and-wife team behind Independence Brewing. This event will mark the first time Prince’s Hot Chicken has been served in Texas.
A ticket to a Family Craft event gets you dinner, beer pairings, and often a little extra. In this case, Independence Brewing Brewmaster Brannon Radicke will provide the beer pairings but also a brewery tour with exclusive tastings. Your $65 ticket gets you a seat at one of the seatings (6:00 and 8:30) and a chance to taste Nashville’s James Beard Classic hot chicken.

On Wednesday, May 17th, and Thursday, May 18th, we’ll head to San Francisco, California for our second event.
Join October for an epic night of food and beer with critically-acclaimed chefs Jeremiah Stone and Fabian Von Hauske and award-winning Fort Point Beer Company. It's a family affair: the duo behind New York’s most innovative restaurants (Contra and Wildair) are best friends, and San Francisco’s fastest-growing brewery was founded by brothers Tyler and Justin Catalana. Set in the historic Presidio with sweeping views of the Bay, the evening will showcase the best that Family Craft has to offer.
Your $125 ticket gets a you into one of the two seatings each day (6:00 and 8:30), where you'll have multi-course family-style dinner by Stone and Hauske with beer pairings by Head Brewer Mike Schnebeck of Fort Point, with detailed introductions to each course and beer pairing. You'll also get a meet-and-greet with the Fort Point representatives, along with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Firehouse at Fort Mason.
