Drekker Ectogasm Is a Fiendishly Delicious IPA

August 21, 2018

By Jerard Fagerberg, August 21, 2018

Fargo is better known for its cartoonish interpretation by the Coen brothers than for its kickass beer scene, but Viking-inspired brewery Drekker wants to change that.

Ectogasm is its demonic secret weapon. Brewed on a pillow of oats with Citra and Mosaic hops, it’s a beast masquerading as a teddy bear, reminding you never to sleep on North Dakota. Take a sip of this dastardly silky New England IPA and be seized by its power.

Appearance

The label design from North Dakota artist Punchgut is iconic among hopheads, and the green goblin emblazoned on the can announces everything you need to know about this beer. Out of the can, it pours a filmy, gauzy gold, looking more like lemon curd or melted butter than beer.

Aroma

The moment the seal is broken, a melange of sweet and citrusy scents waft out of the can. Pouring produces aromas of under-ripe grapefruit, peach pit and bergamot.

Ectogasm is a spirit-shaker.”

Flavor

Drekker loads Ectogasm with a silo of oats, effectively softening the beer without compromising all of its bite. Lemon and passionfruit complement a bitterness that lingers on the tongue and esophagus. This balance makes for an incredibly satisfying New England IPA.

Overall

Ectogasm is a spirit-shaker. With its fiendish combination of softness, harshness and juice, it’s one of the finest New England IPAs you’re liable to find west of the Mississippi.
