When you sit down at a restaurant and look at the menu, the beet salad isn’t cleverly called “Purple Raindrops.” The wine is named by grape variety. Cocktails occasionally get the vanity plate treatment, when they are not already dubbed an Old Fashioned or Last Word.

It’s beer, though, that holds the crown for most creative use of names, from Combat Marshmallow to Snaggletooth Bandana. These names not only represent the liquid in the glass, but often stand on their own as feats of literary accomplishment.

Why do breweries take the extra step? Why don't they simply name their IPA, “Our Brewery’s IPA,” and instead opt for Butterfly Flashmob? Solemn Oath Brewery’s co-founder John Barley, whose suburban Chicago brewery is responsible for all of the aforementioned beer names, joins us in this episode of the October Podcast to discuss the rhyme and reason of beer-naming.
