Terrapin's Wake-n-Bake Is a Beer for Coffee-Lovers

December 28, 2018

By Charlie Crespo, December 28, 2018

We all have ways that one way we like to take our coffee. Some prefer cream, while others like it black. Even in the dead of winter, some will only drink iced coffee. For Terrapin Beer Company, only Jittery Joe’s special blend will do. The brewery teamed with the Athens, Georgia-based roaster to create a dark, well-balanced blend called Wake-n-Bake. Terrapin then uses it in its coffee oatmeal imperial stout, which shares the same name.

Appearance

Even on my grumpiest of mornings, I will always crack a smile at this label—a turtle in a chef’s outfit baking cookies. Delightful. The beer pours a deep, deep black with a head that is a lighter shade of tan than you might expect from an Imperial stout. Wake-n-Bake holds its head fairly well, but does not leave much lacing on the glass.

It’s not the most complex beer, but it doesn’t have to be. It is great at what it does.”

Aroma

As you would guess, the nose is predominantly coffee. With that said, it also has a sweeter side with notes of chocolate chip cookies and syrup. Imagine sleeping in and waking up to your significant other in the kitchen, baking cookies and brewing a fresh pot of coffee. That’s Wake-n-Bake’s aroma.

Flavor

Once again, coffee—specifically bitter espresso—is the flavor at the forefront. Let it warm though, and you’ll pick up notes of dark chocolate, leather, and caramel. Despite all this, Wake-n-Bake is on the dryer side of the spectrum and not particularly thick for an imperial stout.

Overall

Yes, Wake-n-Bake is definitely a beer for coffee-lovers. It’s not the most complex beer, but it doesn’t have to be. It is great at what it does. At 9.4% ABV, Wake-n-Bake is perfect for settling in with on a cold winter’s night. Just be careful; it hides that ABV really well.
