Mikkeller’s Freddie Murkury Beer Is Better than the Movie

November 09, 2018

By Jerard Fagerberg, November 09, 2018

Mikkeller has given life to some of the most eccentric beers on the planet. It has brewed hundreds of limited releases at its 43 partner locations across 21 cities in 16 countries and has shown no shortage of creativity in this nomadic pursuit. But by co-opting the likeness of Queen frontman and Bohemian Rhapsody subject Freddie Mercury for its New England-style double IPA Freddie Murkury, Mikkeller’s San Diego contingent has shown that this particular beer is bound for glory.

Appearance

The name may seem little more than a pun, but Freddie Murkury is replete with the lovely hop haze that’s come to typify the New England IPA. It’s not oppressively turbid, though, looking more like an unfiltered apple cider than orange juice. Absolutely no sediment falls to the bottom, which should delight drinkers who are tired of spending $20 on a four-pack of New England-style IPA just to get clumps of protein floating around the bottom.

Of course, this isn’t a one-note New England-style double IPA, it’s named for a guy with a four-octave range.”

Aroma

Even a glancing whiff of Freddie Murkury tickles the hairs in the deepest parts of your nose. The aroma shimmers off the glass with esters of apricot, grapefruit pith and, surprisingly enough, vanilla. The sensation quickly mops your tongue with anticipation.

Flavor

Freddie Murkury doesn’t overload on the juice, instead allowing the piney flavors of the Simcoe hops sit right alongside the succulence of the Mosaic hops. Since it doesn’t rely too heavily on hops to bear the brunt of the flavor, you get plenty of the beer’s 9% ABV, especially in the finish. Of course, this isn’t a one-note New England-style double IPA, it’s named for a guy with a four-octave range.

Overall

Rami Malek step aside. Mikkeller San Diego does right by the legacy of Freddie Mercury with its potent, ravishing New England-style double IPA. Clean, intoxicating and bold—it’s a sure-fire hit for the world’s most prolific brewing operation. If only I could say the same about the movie.
