It’s 2019 and craft lagers are a way of life. Hallelujah! To me, a well-made, clean, crisp lager—whether pilsner, kolsch, or another lager variant—is a beautiful thing. So, this year, when Rhinegeist’s Cheetah Lager was promoted from a draft-only special to year-round, canned mainstay, I couldn’t wait to crack one open.
Appearance and Aroma
Cheetah pours a pale straw-yellow with eggshell-colored foam. It has decent head retention, but the foam dissipated a bit more quickly, than I’d hoped, with only a ring of foam coating the glass after a few seconds. When brought to the nose, prominent yet soft aromas of bread dough and corn flakes come forth from the glass. This is complemented by a subtle floral, spice hop aroma in the background.

Rhinegeist kept the malt bill straightforward with Cheetah Lager, going with only 2-row pale malt and rice to make up the backbone of the beer. This clean approach allows for the chosen malt and hops to shine. The first sip deliver exactly what you’d expect—more bready dough and corn flake flavors. Saphir hops add a tinge of citrus and spice, while a mild bitterness comes through at the end. This is complemented by a creamy, pillowy mouthfeel and crisp, clean finish.
Extremely drinkable, Cheetah Lager is an uncomplicated yet well-done representation of an American lager. At only 4.8% ABV, it’s a libation just about any beer drinker can get excited about.
