The Sam Adams Taproom Just Released an RBG-Themed Beer

An 86-year-old Supreme Court Justice might seem like an unlikely candidate for rockstar status, but Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been the exception to all sorts of rules throughout her career. Within the last two years, the notorious RBG has gone from a bonified feminist icon to the star of an Oscar-nominated documentary, the subject of the feature film On the Basis of Sex, and a recurring Kate McKinnon sketch on SNL. Her face has appeared on T-shirts, throw pillows, scented candles, and now, at long last, a beer.

This week, Bostonians will raise a glass to health and hopefully very long life of tough-as-hell Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at a special Samuel Adams taproom release. Specifically, they’ll be downing pints of When There Are Nine, the brewery’s beer-y homage to the feminist icon. The beer’s name comes from the notorious RBG’s pithy response to the question “When will there be enough women on the Supreme Court?”

We wanted to name it Brut Bader Ginsburg but our legal team, uh, dissented.”

“We wanted to name it Brut Bader Ginsburg but our legal team, uh, dissented,” states the brewery team on the event page (Samuel Adams did not immediately respond to a request for a comment).

Fittingly, the Belgian Brut IPA is as dry as the Supreme Court Justice’s sense of humor and was brewed on International Women’s Day in collaboration with the Pink Boots Society, which helps raise up women within the brewing industry.

For every $20 ticket sold to tonight’s event, the brewery will give customers a pint, four dumplings from Mei Mei, and a $5 donation to the Pink Boots Society. In honor of the 86-year-old justice’s grueling workout, the brewery will be hosting a plank contest to raise money to the ACLU’s Women’s Right Project, which RBG founded.

We’re guessing the lady in question would approve, although she’s probably too busy punching holes in that glass ceiling to notice.
