Summer's Brewery & Bar Openings & Closings

June 03, 2017

By Tucker Anders, June 03, 2017

Breweries are opening at record pace and there is no bubble in sight, but like any small businesses, breweries must adapt and learn or they can face shutting their doors. Periodically, we’ll track openings and closings across the industry to keep you informed.

May 2017
All-American Ale Works
Anaheim, CA

With help from a Kickstarter campaign, All-American opened its doors in late May. The brewery is named in honor of our country. Veterans Steve McHugh and Jeff King are owners of the venture, and the brewery already offers 10% off for vets and first responders.

Former home brewer Ryan McHugh will head up brewing operations, taking his love for beer to the commercial level for the first time. The tap list features All-American brews like The Patriot Pale Ale and the Storm the Beach Red Ale with Coconut.

June 2017
Protector Brewery
San Diego, CA

After a soft opening in early June, Protector Brewery will become the self proclaimed first organic brewery in San Diego. Also veteran owned, former Navy Seal Sean Haggerty and Head Brewer Ben Betz bring the industrial style tap room into a business park featuring several other breweries and wineries.

Founder Haggerty brewed his first beer in Iraq while on deployment. At Protector, he is teaming up with Betz to churn out an initial tap list including two IPAs, two Pales, a hefeweizen and a stout using only organic ingredients.

Summer 2017
SouthNorte Brewing
San Diego, CA

Coronado Brewing’s Head Brewer Ryan Brooks will open SouthNorte Brewing later this summer. The new brewery is backed by Coronado, and, though the two entities will be separate, SouthNorte’s early brewing operations will be housed in Coronado’s facility.

Brooks and SouthNorte will add Mexican influence and flavors into the booming San Diego beer landscape, seeking to capitalize on the best aspects of both beer worlds to create SouthNorte’s offerings.

Summer 2017
Purpose Brewing and Cellars
Fort Collins, CO

Peter Bouckaert is leaving New Belgium and transitioning to a new project this year (his team is pictured in the header). The former site of 1933 Brewing in Fort Collins will be home to Purpose Brewing and Cellars later this summer. Bouckaert bring his considerable expertise to the Purpose team which includes Zach and Laura Wilson, both formerly of 1933.

Instrumental in New Belgium’s sour program, Bouckaert will balance his current gig with the new venture before transitioning over fully to Purpose. The company will feature coffee in addition to its beer, and will also offer tastings from its on site cellar combined with its draft list.

June 2017
Walnut Brewery
Boulder, CO

Founded in 1990, Walnut Brewery will cease operations on June 4 after 27 years. Industry veteran Frank Day, formerly the founder of Rock Bottom Restaurants (Old Chicago, ChopHouse, Rock Bottom) and now at Boulder Beer, will assume ownership. Day was a member of Walnut’s initial opening team and purchased the brewery back from current owners CraftWorks Brewery & Restaurant Group.

Fans of Walnut will be happy to know that much of the pub will remain the same. While it will fall under the Boulder Beer banner and name, the new location will feature former Walnut beers on tap in addition to Boulder Beer offerings.

June 2017
Petaluma Hills Brewing Company
Petaluma, CA

Petaluma Hills Brewing Company will shut its doors on June 30. Owner J.J. Jay opened the brewery and taproom across from Lagunitas in Petaluma in 2013.

The brewery featured beers across many different styles, but did not seem to produce a singular standout according to the October Beer Directory with most beers rating near average.

July 2017
Fort Collins Brewery
Fort Collins, CO

Longtime Colorado beer community staple Fort Collins Brewery has sold to Canada’s Red Truck Beer Company. Red Truck will move its headquarters into the purchased space in early 2018. For its part, Fort Collins Brewery says it will continue to supply customers through July.

With four year round brews and myriad seasonals/small batch releases, FCB boasts 128 beers graded in our directory; however, its offerings generally were not heralded with an average beer rating across -0.04.
