As Christmas approaches, South Florida is awash in coquito. Attending a holiday party? Wrapping things up late at your office or rifling through your fridge? Somehow, it's there. A rum-based drink, coquito is similar to eggnog and originated in Puerto Rico; each batch has its own unique characteristics depending on who makes it.
Paying homage to this ubiquitous drink, Wynwood Brewing Company created Coquí-to, a rum barrel-aged imperial milk stout with coconut, cinnamon, clove, and vanilla beans. In its second year, Coquí-to’s release has already become a tradition for Miami beer lovers.
Coquí-to pours a dark chocolate color, with a full, bronze head. An impressive-looking beer, it retains that head well. You’ll marvel at the lacing on your glass.
Tilting the glass, you’ll first pick up the aroma of warm banana bread. Following that, you’ll notice notes of rum, eggnog, cinnamon, and hazelnut. It all works together, no flavor dominating another. With a nose like this, it’s a beer over which you won’t mind lingering.

The flavor follows but also builds on the nose. On top of what you already picked up, you’ll get coffee, nutmeg, faint coconut, and milk chocolate from Coquí-to. It’s pillowy soft—particularly on nitro—and very well-balanced. The rum barrel is restrained and adds an additional layer to the flavor profile.
Coquí-to works as all great beers should: Its flavors complement each other, as opposed to one particular component overshadowing the others.
